Cortez is located in the southwestern corner of Colorado and is known as the archaeological hearland of the United States. The drive down from Green River was filled with beautiful desert scenes and some pretty nice mountains. We left Green River at 4554 feet elevation and gained almost 1500 feet to 5919 feet elevation. We left Green River about 10:30 and pulled in to the Sundance RV Park located almost in town, nestled in among many trees to prevent sat. dish reception, about 2:30 this afternoon. We stopped in Montecello for lunch. Good luck that the park has a great cable lineup so we expect to get the NFL game on CBS tonight.
Right out of Green River....is the river. But it's not green.
As we went along the mountains really expoded with the redstone color.
On the other side of this huge rock is a gift shop (what else) carved out of the side of the rock.

Out on the road...the high desert.
This is Hwy 491 south to Gallup.
More desert.
Gallup, New Mexico That green sign says "Historic 66".......Route 66. We were tempted by we decided to stick to I-40, the quicker route to Albuquerque.
Out on I-40 we saw several places where there were outcropping of black rocks.
A sign said "Albuquerque next 17 exits".
Beautiful colors like this are seen all through this area all the way to the San Rafael Swell, which is about 45 minutes driving time away.

Stopped at a rest area so the dogs could "rest".
Here's the same photo shown at the top without the zoom. It was really amazing to see such a huge mass of rock where the road was cut right through it.
This was one of those days you wish you could have everyday. The air was crystal clear and the temp was about 85 degress and only a slight breeze. The altitude here was about 7300 feet.
We pulled in at this observation point to take some photos. There was a sign that said "no vendors or solicitating".
I'd say the sign was mostly ignored.

The day started off with smooth rolling hills.
We started seeing a hint of redstone in the hills.
Most of the newer buildings in this area blended in with the color of the mountains.

After a some what later start than was planned due to a dead battery on the Tahoe........we got started about a hour late. The 2007 Tahoe had the battery moved from the left front to the right rear part of the engine compartment but they left the other battery case installed. So since I had just bought a new battery for my truck (left at home), I decided to install it in the vacant battery case, just in case. This morning it came in handy. After I decided it would take less time to switch batteries instead of waiting for the dead one to charge up, in about 20 minutes we were on our way.
The drive to this High Desert city, one of America's oldest, took about 5 hours; 273 miles down what use to be known as the Devil's Highway because it was numbered 666. The State changed that to 491 and current maps show it that way. The map to the left was done with Mappoint 2004. Mappoint 2007 shows Hwy 491. The road was pretty good and we made pretty good time down to Gallup and a quick glance at Route 66 and then turned on to I-40 on in to our campsite here in Albuquerque.
Here is Key resting on his mat outside.
The dog walk....unless you have a finicky dog that insist on a large bush to hide behind. For Key, this just won't cut it. (This was at Cortez, CO)
Out on I-40, we saw many huge outcropping of rocks.
The first sighting of Albuquerque.
